Wales vs England Six Nations 2011 – 04 February 2011

Date: 04 February 2011, Time: 19:45 GMT
Venue: Millennium Stadium

This is going to be a huge match and we could not have had the more explosive and better start to the Six nations, with England traveling to Wales and will play in the Millennium stadium where they will be having the most hostile crowd and it will be interesting to see how this relatively young side cope with the environment. Wales had a woeful 2010 and could only managed to get two wins under their belt and that came against Italy and Scotland, last years opener was between England and Wales and it was England who came out as winners at twickenham. Warren Garland knows his team will have to play really well to get off to a start against rationally their biggest rivals England and with the huge home support and some extra motivation maybe this is the start they needed to get back to winning ways after a very poor 2010. Players to Watch out Pertinent-bound centre James Hook will be the one for the home side Wales, he has established himself as one of the very best in Europe in his position and he will be looking to leave his mark on this opening match.

Last year Six Nations 2010 : The Azzurri would have regarded their 2010 6 Nations campaign as a qualified success. Victory at home against Scotland came one week after Nick Mallett's side came within five points of causing a massive upset against England. Unfortunately - as is almost always the case - Italy were unable to trouble their hosts on the road as an opening day defeat in Dublin (when fly-half Craig Gower made his debut) was followed by drubbings in Paris and Cardiff to finish the tournament on a low.

This year Six Nations 2011 : The same old, same old. Italy will hope to sneak a win at home and then limit the damage on the road. Indeed there's nothing new under the sun in Rome, and therein lives the problem. The lack of a world-class half-backs is an issue and Gower's absence through injury hasn't helped. Italy will have to rely mainly on their pack and a largely one-dimensional game-plan. The draw isn't favourable either: The home game against Wales is perhaps the Azzurri's best chance of a positive result as Murrayfield is not an easy place to visit these days. Italy have won just two Six Nations games in the last three years (both against Scotland in Rome) - We hope that trend will change, but it's not likely.

Coach Six Nations 2011 : Former Stade Français and South Africa boss Nick Mallett took over the Italy job from Pierre Berbizier in October 2007. English-born but having moved to Cape Town as a child, Mallett was a record-setting leader of the Springboks and spent four years in Paris as coach, where he won two domestic titles before the Azzurri came calling. The 54-year-old's stay in Rome is set to come to an end however as he is expected to be replaced after the World Cup by current Perpignan and former France assistant coach Jacques Brunel. Despite being recognised as one of the best in the business, many feel Mallett has taken Italy as far as he can and it's time for fresh ideas.

Captain Six Nations 2011 : Born in Argentina, back-rower Sergio Parisse has been the fulcrum for both Stade Français and Italy for some time now and enjoyed his finest individual season in 2008 when he was a nominee for the IRB Player of the Year award. So much asked of him, so much delivered, a truly unique talent and grafting player. He would make many a top international side. However a serious knee injury ruled him out of the 2010 Six Nations and he was sorely missed. Luckily for Italy, he's back again this year!

Player to watch Six Nations 2011 : For years Italy have struggled to find a quality fly-half to lead their attack but in stalwart wing Mirco Bergamasco at least they have a solid goal-kicker. Italy have always based their game around their pack where Martin Castrogiovanni is the king-pin in the front row.

Honours Six Nations : Five Nations Grand Slam (1925, 1984 & 1990), Five Nations winners (Five outright, six shared), Four Nations winners (nine outright, two shared)

Last year Six Nations 2010 : After three Six Nations losses in 2010, Scotland revived their tournament by drawing with England at Murrayfield before defeating Ireland in Dublin. An opening 18-9 loss to France at Murrayfield was followed by a demoralising 31-24 defeat to Wales in Cardiff, where wing Shane Williams broke Scottish hearts with a last-gasp try to deny the visitors at the death. The game though was overshadowed by Scotland wing Thom Evans suffering a career-ending neck injury, while his team-mate Chris Paterson was also detained in hospital. It only got worse for Scotland after losing to Italy 16-12 in Rome after substitute Pablo Canavosio scored the only try of a poor game. The Scots avoided a fourth successive loss by drawing with England 15-15, and then ended the tournament on high as Dan Parks kicked Scotland to a stunning 23-20 Croke Park triumph that meant his team avoided the Wooden Spoon.

This year Six Nations 2011 : Recent results, the mauling by the All Blacks aside, have been encouraging. Scotland will travel to Paris for their Six Nations opener following wins in five of their last six games, a run which includes back-to-back victories over the Pumas in Argentina. Scotland's record in opening matches of the Six Nations is less impressive however, with defeats in 10 of 11 games since the championship was expanded to include Italy. After Paris, Scotland have back-to-back home matches against Wales and Ireland before travelling to Twickenham to face England in March followed by a Murrayfield finale against Italy. Scotland's hopes will hinge on whether they are able to reproduce the sort of form that saw them upset South Africa 21-17 at Murrayfield last year.

Coach Six Nations 2011 : Andy Robinson, a former England coach and assistant coach when they won the 2003 World Cup, took over as Scotland boss in 2009 from the axed Frank Hadden. In 13 matches as Scotland head coach since his appointment, Robinson - who is under contract until after the 2012 Six Nations - has overseen seven wins, one draw and five defeats. However, the last six matches have yielded five wins, the one 'blip' coming against New Zealand in the opening international last November, a thumping 49-3 loss which serves as a constant reminder for Robinson. Wins over Australia, Ireland, Argentina (twice), South Africa and Samoa during Robinson's reign, though, have led many to believe Scotland could challenge for the Six Nations title this year. The 2011 Six Nations Championship will be Robinson's second as Scotland head coach and it includes a trip to the Rugby Football Union's headquarters, a venue where he won many honours while playing for Bath, for a match against the team he represented as both player and coach.

Captain Six Nations 2011 : Glasgow lock Alastair Kellock is the man chosen to lead the side in 2011, having led the side admirably in last year's historic 2-0 Test series win over the Pumas in Argentina. The 29-year-old second-rower succeeds Rory Lawson as skipper, with the Gloucester number nine's fellow scrum-halves Mike Blair and Chris Cusiter having also taken the armband in the last 12 months.

Players to watch Six Nations 2011 : In the forwards, Glasgow flanker John Barclay is having an outstanding season and will no doubt be the player opposition target this year. His ferocious appetite for work was clear for all to see in his Herculean display against South Africa. A real poacher at the breakdown area. In the backs, Ruaridh Jackson - Barclay's team-mate at the Warriors - will keep first-choice pivot Dan Parks on his toes. There are many who are placing more faith in the 22-year-old Jackson and that he is the playmaking fly-half Scotland have been lacking for many years. The England-born Glasgow star showed he is made of stern stuff when he landed a last-minute kick to defeat Samoa last November. He is a more creative player than Parks and under the coaching of Andy Robinson has the potential to be brought along nicely and even go into the World Cup as their number one.

Honours: 6 Nations Grand Slam (2005 and 2008), Five Nations Grand Slam (1911, 1950, 1952, 1971, 1976 & 1978), Four Nations Grand Slam (1908, 1909), Six Nations winners (Twice), Five Nations Winners (15 outright, eight shared), Four Nations winners (seven outright, three shared)

Last year Six Nations 2011 : Wales had a woeful 2010 in which they managed only two wins, against Italy and Scotland. The Welsh opened last year's campaign with a 30-17 defeat to England at Twickenham, although they weren't helped by lock Alun-Wyn Jones' reckless trip on Dylan Hartley that earned the Ospreys forward a yellow card - England scored 17 points while Jones was off the field. An eventful tournament for Wales continued at pace as a last-gasp Shane Williams try sunk Scotland 31-24 in a Cardiff classic. Wales, now minus an injured Alun-Wyn Jones and a suspended Andy Powell following his infamous golf buggy incident, lost 26-20 at home to Friday night opponents France and then went on to lose 27-12 at the hands of the Irish at Croke Park. Not since the final game of last season's Six Nations tournament when they predictably toppled the Azzurri in Cardiff, have Gatland's men finished on the right side of the ledger.

This year Six Nations 2011 : Coach Warren Gatland knows is under massive pressure after a string of disappointing results. And the 2011 Six Nations could not get off to a more explosive start, with a Friday home match against traditionally Wales' biggest rivals England at the Millennium Stadium. Wales, the 2008 Grand Slam champions, who have finished fourth in the last two tournaments, then face away games against Scotland, Italy and France before finishing in Cardiff against Ireland. Despite a poor return from the November Tests, the Welsh pack proved itself a force to be reckoned with. However, their backline play has become one-dimensional and easy to manage. The line-out continues to be a problem area and an inability to secure victory in close games suggests mental fragility.

Coach Six Nations 2011 : Warren Gatland has a reputation for success, and his CV proves it, having masterminded a Six Nations title win plus Heineken Cup glory and three English Premiership titles while at Wasps and the Air New Zealand Cup with Waikato during his coaching career. However, the knives are out for Gatland - who agreed a new WRU contract last year that will run until after the 2015 World Cup - after a poor November Test series stretched Wales' winless streak to seven games. There is no doubting his initial impact in the role, but can he take a talented, if paper thin, squad to the next level?

Captain Six Nations 2011 : Ryan Jones was initially installed as captain by Warren Gatland but the big number eight has been forced to make way for hooker Matthew Rees, who impressed when handed the responsibility ahead of Jones in November last year, and led from the front with some strong displays. However, his line-out throwing remains a concern.

Player to watch: In the backline, Perpignan-bound centre James Hook is firmly established as one of European rugby's most creative players, with the ability to unlock most defences. Hook, whether he plays fly-half, centre or full-back, is an attacking threat Wales will want to utilise. In the forwards, Gatland has placed enormous faith in the 22-year-old loose forward Sam Warburton as he preferred him to his Cardiff Blues team-mate and 98-Test veteran Martyn Williams. Daunting as it is to follow someone of the stature of Williams, Warburton possesses great qualities such as mobility and excellent tackling and mentally appears well-prepared for the rigours and stresses of a first Six Nations campaign.

England live stream & Six Nations preview

Last year Six Nations 2010: Some would say that the wheels came off the England machine in the 2010 Championship. Things all began so encouragingly with a success over Wales at Twickenham and they backed that up with a hard-fought win on Italian soil. However, that second victory was one that frustrated many as England slipped back into their kick-chase mindset with Ireland, Scotland and France subsequently not bowled over by what they had seen from the Red Rose. What followed proved just that as a defeat, draw and then defeat saw them ultimately finish in a disappointing third position. Lewis Moody was a new leader.

This year Six Nations 2011: England can finally be allowed a little room for optimism following what was a decent second half to 2010. They star off with a visit to the hostile venue that is the Millennium Stadium but with Wales struggling for numbers, the visitors will fancy their chances of opening things up strongly. Following that clash there is a three-game home run for the 2003 World Cup winners, beginning against Italy before France and Scotland go to Twickenham. There is no doubt that this side will be there or thereabouts but whether the old problem of consistency will become an issue remains a nagging doubt.

Coach Six Nations 2011 : Former England and British & Irish Lions captain Martin Johnson succeeded Bath stalwart Brian Ashton as coach in 2008 after another below-par Six Nations, inheriting a team very much in an uncertain period of transition. Johnson, who retired from playing after lifting the 2003 World Cup, installed ex-London Irish boss Brian Smith as his right-hand man in an attempt to improve their attacking flair. And it finally seems to be happening.

Captain Six Nations 2011 : Bath flanker Lewis Moody seems to be Johnson's man for the job after doing good things at Leicester and now the Rec. First handed the England armband in their last game of the 2010 Six Nations, 'Mad Dog' was swiftly taken over on a full-time basis and will continue to lead by example - when fit - in 2011.

Player to watch Six Nations 2011: Shooting up both club and national ranks over the last year or so, scrum-half Ben Youngs exemplifies everything that a coach craves from his number nine. Lively at the base and always a threat with breaks, the Leicester Tiger is key to England's new-look side. But will he have Toby Flood or Jonny Wilkinson outside him?

France Live Stream Rugby & Six Nations preview

Honours: 6 Nations Grand Slam (2010, 2004, 2002), Five Nations Grand Slam (1968, 1977, 1981, 1987, 1997, 1998), Six Nations winners (Five times), Five Nations winners (12 outright, eight shared), World Cup runners-up (1987, 1999).

Last year Six Nations 2010: Les Bleus claimed another Grand Slam in 2010 with a pragmatic approach as their defence rather than their much-heralded attack was the key to success. It's tough to criticise a faultless record - and France really were head and shoulders above the opposition - but they hardly set Europe's stadiums alight with the flair that many had hoped for. With a stable squad - for once - France were able to put an efficient yet ruthless gameplan together. A dominant win at Murrayfield set the tone for the rest of the tournament. A week later Ireland's twelve-match winning streak was swept aside in Paris as the hosts won 33-10. The writing was on the wall after two intercept tries in the first half set up victory in Cardiff. A drubbing of Italy at the Stade de France set up a showdown with the old enemy on the final day but England fell just short in Paris despite the French not being able to cross the whitewash.

This year Six Nations 2011: If the start of 2010 was near-perfect, the rest of the year was a disaster and coach Marc Lièvremont has admitted that les Tricolors have a lot of catching up to do to regain the form of last year's tournament. Yet they have all the ingredients for a world-beating team, including arguably the best scrum in Europe. Their coach has promised to return to a consistent selection policy and has recalled a few stalwarts. If they gel, another title is well within reach. But France do not have a favourable draw. Only two home games and trips to London and Dublin make for a tough task. As World Cup outsiders, the 2011 Six Nations looms as a decisive tournament for France.

Coach Six Nations 2011: Former France loose forward Marc Lièvremont took over from Bernard Laporte after the 2007 World Cup. As assistants Lièvremont brought former Toulouse full-back and France team-mate Emile Ntamack (backs) and Didier Retière (forwards) onboard to reform the trio that lead France to the U21 World Cup title. As a departure from Laporte's strictly disciplined approach, Lièvremont promised to bring back some of the flair that had made French rugby famous, giving the players more leeway to take a more positive, pragmatic approach to decision making. After chopping and changing and handing over 50 different players caps in his first 18 months in charge, Lièvremont finally started to settle on a core group of players and claimed the 2010 Grand Slam. The consistency was short-lived however as more experimentation lead to a disastrous rest of the year. In reaction Lièvremont has promised to take a more hands-on approach to all aspects of team life.

Captain Six Nations 2011: Consistently France's top tackler, Thierry Dusautoir is widely recognised as one of the world's top flankers. When aging second-row stalwart Lionel Nallet was forced to miss France's tour in New Zealand and Australia in 2009, Dusautoir took over as skipper with a view to leading Les Bleus to the 2011 World Cup. There have been questions in the press over his ability to motivate and communicate with his team-mates, but as far as the coaches are concerned he is the undisputed leader.

Player to watch Six Nations 2011: France have a wealth of talent in the back row, including Biarritz hardman Imanol Harinordoquy. Once referred to as "Harry-ordinary" by critics on the other side of the channel, the 30-year-old's game has developed to such an extent that he was nominated for the IRB's World Player of the Year Award in 2010. Apart from being a powerful ball carrier, his versatility makes him invaluable as he is able to play as both number eight and on the blindside flank while his height makes him a dangerous line-out option.

Ireland Live Stream Rugby Six Nations preview

Last year Six Nations 2010: Rugby Six Nations 2nd place behind Grand Slam winners France, the Irish had a hot and cold Championship that was good in London but unfortunately poor in Paris. That 33-10 demolition at Stade de France showed just how far Les Bleus were ahead of their rivals and despite beating England at Twickenham, the Irish campaign ended terribly with a 23-20 defeat to Scotland.

This year Six Nations 2011: Ireland will be quietly confident of reclaiming the title they won back in 2009 as their draw cannot be sniffed at. Home ties against France and England will encourage both management and supporters alike and if they can avoid any slip-ups in Italy and Scotland - a tough ask - then they have a big chance of lifting a trophy. Brian O'Driscoll, Jonathan Sexton and Jamie Heaslip will be key as we expect that the off-loading game of Leinster to shine. One big question that needs answering though is whether Declan Kidney believes it is time for David Wallace to step aside for Sean O'Brien, once Stephen Ferris returns from injury.

Coach Six Nations 2011: Softly-spoken Declan Kidney took over after a disastrous 2007 World Cup, which saw the country fail to make the knockout stages, followed by further Six Nations woe under Eddie O'Sullivan. The latter had to go and announced his resignation in March 2008 after winning three Triple Crowns in his seven-year tenure. His successor has a knack of winning big trophies, however, and Kidney's record with Munster has transferred to Ireland as they claimed the Grand Slam in 2009. Last year's championship saw them finish in defeat at home to Scotland, hinting that it might be time for Kidney to go with the youth.

Captain: Star centre Brian O'Driscoll was appointed to lead Ireland after the retirement of legendary hooker Keith Wood following the 2003 RWC. Probably the best backline player in world rugby, 'BOD' has shown before that captaincy brings out the best in his play, which could only be a good thing for Irish rugby. He was also British & Irish Lions captain on the 2005 tour to New Zealand, and the serious shoulder injury he suffered has not hampered his form since. South Africa in 2009 saw that. Still the darling of Irish rugby.

Player to watch Six Nations 2011: The back-row has been a strong area for Ireland in recent seasons and the next one off the conveyor belt is someone to watch. Sean O'Brien has been doing the business for Leinster and has been backed in many corners to start for his country this Six Nations. Whether he can usurp David Wallace is difficult to say but on form, he should start.
