Munster, a two-time European Cup winner, has named a strong side to face the Wallabies which includes New Zealand’s record Test try-scoring wing Doug Howlett, fellow ex-All Blacks midfielder Sam Tuitupou and the ex Australian Under-21 flyhalf Paul Warwick.
Munster’s Australian coach, Tony McGahan, has also been allowed to include the Irish international trio: centre Keith Earls, fullback Johne Murphy and hooker Damien Varley, who have all been released from the national squad in order to play in the match.
While Australia beat Munster via a try in injury time during the inaugural meeting between the teams in 1947, the Wallabies have failed to win from four matches against the Irish province in the time since.
The 1958 clash between the two sides ended in a draw with Munster subsequently winning three straight against the visiting Australian teams of 1967, 1981 and 1992.
The 1992 Australian side which lost to Munster was captained by the midweek team’s current assistant coach and ARU High Performance Manager, David Nucifora.
Munster’s 11-8 win over Australia in 1967 was the first success by an Irish province against a major touring country.
The Wallabies arrived in Limerick on Sunday looking to put their Spring Tour back on track after suffering their first defeat of the trip during last weekend’s Cook Cup Test against England at Twickenham in London.
This came after Australia had won its opening three matches on tour, which includes last week’s tour match against the reigning English Premiership champions, Leicester Tigers.
Seven players from the touring party will return to Australia after tomorrow morning’s game, while the rest of the squad moves on to Florence to prepare for Saturday’s Test against Italy.
The Wallabies line-up for the weekend’s Test will be named on Thursday night [AEDT].
