England vs Australia Match Preview :

It is a stable but realistic Qantas Wallabies side that heads to Twickenham on Saturday looking to add to the momentum that has already been gained on the current Spring Tour.

Coach Robbie Deans has made just one change to the match squad of 22 players that was originally named for last week’s 25-16 win over Wales in Cardiff: hooker Stephen Moore is re-instated to the starting XV after pulling out due to a back complaint during the warm up last weekend, while Huia Edmonds takes over from Saia Faingaa on the bench.

The 29-year-old Edmonds, who understudies Moore at the Brumbies, has impressed in both of his outings during the last week, making a difference when he came off the bench against Wales, before performing strongly through the opening hour at Leicester midweek.

Australia’s gritty 25-16 win over reigning English Premiership champions, the Leicester Tigers, on Thursday morning [AEDT] means that the Wallabies are shooting for four straight as the tour advances to the home of English Rugby.

A win by the Wallabies over England on Saturday would add to the history created last year, when Deans’ men became the first Australian side to string together consecutive wins over England in England.

A successful Cook Cup defence on Saturday would make it three wins in a row at Rugby Football Union headquarters.

Australia won 18-9 at Twickenham last year, which backed up a 28-14 victory over the men in white at the ground the year before.

Seven of the victorious 2008 starting line-up will front again this weekend, while there are 10 survivors in the run on side from last year’s victorious starting XV.

This includes both hooker Moore and halfback Will Genia, who have won the man of the match awards on Australia’s last two visits.

England opened its autumn series with a competitive performance against New Zealand.

While the game was lost 16-26, Martin Johnson’s side rallied gamely after conceding an early 3-17 advantage.

Significantly they also stretched the All Blacks defensively on a number of occasions, showing a greater variety in their attacking play than has been seen previously.

Much has been made both by the press and the England team itself about the 21-20 success England achieved over Australia in the second Cook Cup Test in Sydney earlier in the year.

Johnson has largely shown faith in the players who achieved that result, fielding 13 of that starting XV on Saturday, with the only changes coming in the front row where the wrecking ball prop Andy Sheridan and the combative hooker Dylan Hartley have been included.

But while the English have put much stock in the Sydney result, the reality is that it will be a vastly different Australian side that fronts on Saturday: just eight of the starters from that night at the Olympic Stadium remain.

The problems encountered at scrum time last weekend in Cardiff, which the English and Australian press have dined out on this week, can also be expected to be rectified.

The issue lay primarily with the back five of the Australian scrum, who failed to consistently lend their collective muscle to the cause, as opposed to the front three themselves.

Expect Australia to “scrum as an eight’ this weekend, as they did last year when Saturday’s starting front rowers – Benn Robinson, Moore and Ben Alexander – were more than a match for their English counterparts.

Significantly the trio were all absent earlier in the year when the Wallabies scrum conceded two penalty tries to the English during Australia’s 27-17 win in Perth.

An Australian win this weekend would tie the two teams at 10 wins apiece, with a further game drawn, from the 21 matches played on English soil.

It would also allow the Wallabies to retain the Cook Cup, which was first contested in 1997, for a fourth straight year.

As a statistical aside, the first try scored by the Wallabies on Saturday will be the 100th Australia has scored against England, from the 40 Test matches that the two teams have played.

The Test kicks off at 1.30am [AEDT] and will be shown live on both Fox Sports and Channel 10.
