Australia vs Wales Match Preview :
Australia will at long last head into a post-New Zealand Test match with a winning feeling on Saturday as they prepare to meet an injury-hit Wales.
Two-and-a-half years it took for them to beat the All Blacks again but finally, that last-ditch success at Hong Kong Stadium hands the Golds a platform upon which to launch their November. Their series will next week see them move on to England before a trip to Italy and finally France.
So what price for a clean sweep? Well one bookmaker has them at 3/1 to come through it unscathed - something that has already led to our resident Tipster putting his hand in his pocket.
The first autumn obstacle comes at the ideal time for Australia too, as the 2008 Six Nations winners are weakened by big names dropping like flies. Out goes number eight Ryan Jones, centres Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies, full-back Lee Byrne and winger Leigh Halfpenny.
Even more worrying for head coach Warren Gatland - who this week signed a contract extension until World Cup 2015 - has been Wales' poor form over their past twelve games. Granted, taking on the hefty southern trio below the equator regularly sees results go in one direction but add to that a fourth-place finish in this year's Six Nations and all roads seem to be leading to a difficult autumn.
Australia meanwhile are on the up with the events in New Zealand closing in - not bad for a nation whose head coach was apparently under real pressure not so long ago. There is also now a calming consistency in selection while back-rowers Ben McCalman, David Pocock and Rocky Elsom have been impressive in front of Reds half-backs Will Genia and Quade Cooper. However, one somewhat grey area has been over the kicking job after Matt Giteau's problems in both the Tri-Nations and most recently Asia. So now the tee is handed to a man who thrives under the spotlight, James O'Connor.
The starlet seems not to comprehend pressure and the testing conditions with the roof off shouldn't concern him as he has the technique to stop Oz falling to their third loss in six trips to the capital city. Speaking of the weather and it is expected to turn cloudy with rain likely.
So there you have it, Wales are hampered by those injuries while Australia have just beaten the All Blacks and are growing as a group. Man on man you would also go for the Wallabies.
Ones to watch:
For Wales: There is a new captain in red. Matthew Rees now has the responsibility and his coaches are backing him to do a sound job. Cool heads will be needed though and it will be interesting to see whether he is a three-point or Hail Mary sort of skipper.
For Australia: At 20 years of age, James O'Connor will take the tee for the Wallabies and who would bet against him having a good day. Last week's converted try was another example of how the boy is growing into a man. A decent personal haul on Saturday is likely.
Head-to-head: We are at the base for this one where Mike Phillips and Will Genia will be stood side by side. They are arguably two of the top five scrum-halves in the world right now and if Australia are to become World Cup winners next year, Genia must be fit and in-form. Phillips meanwhile will look to use his power to keep the visiting back-row occupied.
